VMware Horizon Cloud Hosted In The Microsoft Azure

VMware Partnership with  Microsoft’s

VMware and Microsoft have partnered to allow VMware to deliver the features of Windows Virtual Desktop in Horizon Cloud on Microsoft Azure. It’s important to understand how this partnership works from a product and capabilities perspective:

Step 1. The best way to think of Windows Virtual Desktop is as a collection of Azure resources dedicated to remote Windows desktops.

Step 2. On top that, Microsoft built a set of features that customers with certain license types are entitled to. Those features include support for:

Step 3. Windows 10, Windows 10 multi-session (which is like traditional RDSH servers, but with Windows 10 instead of Windows Server), Windows 7 with free Extended Security Updates until Jan 2023, and Windows Server RDSH workloads. Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 7 with free ESU are exclusive features of Windows Virtual Desktop.

Step 4. VMware also has a desktop virtualization platform built on Azure called “Horizon Cloud on Microsoft Azure.” This has been around for several years.

Step 5. We have a partnership with Microsoft that allows us to run the features of Windows Virtual Desktop…

Step 6. …on Horizon Cloud on Microsoft Azure. You’ve likely heard about Horizon running on other platforms, too, but the only place you can run those exclusive features (Win 10 Multi-session and Windows 7 w/ free ESU) is on Azure.

Step 7. WVD includes these features, which establish a solid base

Step 8. Horizon Cloud on Microsoft Azure introduces these other features on top.

This enables customers to realize the benefits of VMware Horizon Cloud with their Windows Virtual Desktop entitlement. These benefits include real-time desktop and application monitoring, capacity optimization through power management options, an improved end-user experience with the Horizon Client and Blast Extreme protocol, and secure access to virtual apps and desktops through Workspace ONE.
